About the Artist

Refrain of Entropy: A statement by Alexander Hraefn Morris

The confluence of chaos and order creates a cyclical balance in the natural world. Temporal constructs of blood and stone are erected and raised, all contributing to life’s tragically beautiful refrain of entropy: The recurring sentiment that with the turn of each cycle comes a lack of order or predictability; a gradual decline into disorder. Within my process for this body of work I am exploring our mortality, the fragility of our existence and of the edicts we use to sustain civilized life.

What wisdom can we be gleaned from observing the gradual ruin of ancient stone constructs? Watching as rich, fertile earth bakes and cracks in the sun? Observing the terminally ill until spirit abandons body? Standing up as prosperity and peace is rent asunder by pride and ignorance? On and on and on ... thus echoes the refrain. I see wisdom in listening to the patterns etched in time by the clash of chaos and order and I attempt to respectfully convey the power they release in my work.

This power acts as a compass, a guide for me through this desert life. In my process, chaos and order are translated into body and spirit, then into line, texture, and color. Line shapes into pattern becoming rich textured abstract figurative forms. I am attracted to line work, color fields and the relationship between color and space, predominantly as they relate to the shape of the human soul: body and spirit. My lines, carved through cracking paint, represent existence and struggle; this life; the experience of living; dealing with chaos; trying to find order in the chaos. Allowing the corporeal half of this relationship unbridled reign can have catastrophic results and can leave one without life giving sustenance as they traverse the flotsam and jetsam of this temporal wasteland. The spirit anchors the body and allows for sober reflection even during the most violent tempest’s cataract. When these two intelligences merge, there is an energy, a reaction, and that blend of chaotic electricity and subtle surety of knowledge, is what makes the experience of living so interesting and beautiful, and breathes life into my paintings. My textures and layers depict the cumulative history of this reconciliatory relationship. By using these languages, my experience is realized and the silent accuracy of abstraction is resolved.
