About the Artist

Artist Statement
The process of creation is for me a process of discovery and experimentation. I work intuitively, not thinking about meaning or symbols until fairly late in the process, at which point a piece is refined and either slightly reworked to make it cohesive, or disassembled entirely to begin anew. It is a somewhat  chaotic process, beginning almost entirely in aesthetics with only a vague idea or concept guiding it, and  evolving into something with much more significance. I work primarily in assemblage, finding most of my materials in garbage piles, thrift stores, or out in remote areas of the desert or mountains. My choice of materials is very inspired by the Arte Povera art movement in Italy in the 1960's, which frequently utilized worthless or common household materials. I also work in oil and watercolor, using a similar process of experimentation, particularly in my abstract works.

My intuitive process often leads me into emotionally dark places, likely the result of a lifelong struggle with depression, though occasionally the lighter side shines throughz. That said, however, I believe that my influences and interpretations of my own work are only particularly relevant during its creation. With its entry into the public view, each viewer becomes an active participant in the development of each piece's meaning or story. Audience response, whether expressed or kept silent, is a crucial part of the creative process of my work, and as these various interpretations find their way back to me, they inform my own evolving interpretations. In this way, the viewer is at least as important to the work as I am, and the concepts and ideas presented in each work evolve even after its completion in the studio.
