About the Artist

Photography has always been a part of my life.  Somewhere deep within my heart, there has always been a desire, almost a need, to express myself through a camera.  The desire to create something beautiful from the mundane or to allow people to consciously see something they look at daily but never really notice is the basis for working with a camera.  To use a camera to capture a brief moment in time and create an image that would cause even a momentary pause in the life of the viewer is a powerful, driving force.  Finding a new and interesting, even other-worldly, perspective of a common landscape and presenting it with some mystique and intrigue is a constant goal.  Many of the images are presented in a way as to reflect the feelings and emotions I experienced at the time of capture and are not meant to be a documentary representation of the subject matter.

My knowledge and skills as a photographer are constantly challenged by the combination of advancements in equipment, accompanied with new limitations, and the ever-changing technology and techniques used in digital capture.  Newer and not necessarily better cameras, more and better software for post-production, better ink and paper combinations for presenting images, and new and more challenging ways to capture images are all a potential source of creativity for the digital photographer. 

This work contains images that have been processed using focus-stacking, image stitching, high dynamic range capture, and compositing and, in many cases, combinations of these processes.  The images were captured with a Nikon D4 camera and processed with Adobe Photoshop.  The digital pigment prints are presented on Epson Ultra-Premium Presentation Matte paper and were printed with an Epson Stylus Pro 4900 printer using HDR UltraChrome inks.  Estimates of the archival life of these prints range from 100-200 years.  I hope you enjoy my work.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

John T. Speros has been a serious student of photography for over twenty years. He has studied photography at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (formerly The Salt Lake Art Center) attending classes and workshops since 1994.  During that time, he has employed various photographic techniques on many subjects including still-life’s, models, and landscapes to abstracts. Between 1994 and 2002, the work included film capture and wet darkroom procedures.  Since 2002, all the work has been digital in nature.

 In and around the Salt Lake Valley, John is better known as the former owner of Salt Lake City’s 96 year old landmark restaurant Lamb’s Grill Café where he worked for over 50 years.  His education includes B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Utah and he completed two and half years towards a PhD. in Pharmacology at the University of Arizona.  In 1971, at the request of his major professor he become involved  in the pharmaceutical industry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before being forced to return to the restaurant business in 1973.
