About the Artist
Sierra Dickey graduated with her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from Utah State University, where she was awarded several scholarships and grants for her artistic abilities as well as academic excellence. She has been featured in many group and solo shows including but not limited to; “Panorama” in downtown Salt Lake, “Cedar City Art Walk”, and “Grandeur” a recent show in Hollywood California. Sierra has also won several awards from different shows and associations, like the Utah State Fair, and the Intermountain Society of Artists.
Sierra has cultivated her unique painting style through years of study. While very skilled in most mediums, Sierra likes to combine all mediums in order to achieve her desired effect based on the subject being represented. As a colorist, her colors and style are meant to emulate emotions, like an aura, radiating from the figures. While the figures in her paintings are simple, the backgrounds are manic allowing a juxtaposition of emotion. Her work maintains a delicate balance between chaos and balance.
Drawing inspiration from her study abroad in Europe, as well as classical artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo Di Vinci, Bernini, and other European artists, Sierra emulates the classical European feel while giving it a modern twist. Her unique style is driven by her desire to bring back classical art that may have been passé. Taking subject matter from pre-existing sculptures, she reinvents old classics and the way they are regarded today. The Greek Tragedies are Sierra’s favorite source of inspiration. Sierra believes that “The Greeks really know how to tell a story and keep the audience empathetically intrigued.”
Artist Statement
My unique style is driven by my desire to bring back classical art but with a modern twist. The subjects of my work are real sculptures and statues from around the world. Like, Bernini, I give sculptures emotion. I build on the stories of the sculptures by using color, helping the viewer to better connect with the individuals on an expressive level. The word statue in Latin means “to stand.” I wish to encourage spectators to become those who stand while the sculptures become those who express.
Opposites and balances are the basis of my technique. I use color schemes and flesh tones to help express the stories told by sculptures. The spontaneous backgrounds are meant to emulate emotions, like an aura of the individuals, locked in that moment in time. My work is about opposites: chaos and balance, compliments and contrasts, classic and modern.
As a mixed-media artist, I combine different media and techniques to achieve an almost three-dimensional look on a Two-dimensional surface. I combination fluid medium, such as inks and watercolor, with fibrous materials, such as paper or fiber paste, to create a contemporary background. The figures in the foreground, are etched out of their two-dimensional surfaces using acrylics and oils.
